PVC Resin SG8: Key Characteristics and Applications

PVC Resin SG8: Key Characteristics and Applications

PVC Resin SG8 is a suspension-grade PVC resin with relatively good processing flow and is used in a range of rigid and semi-rigid PVC applications.

Its properties are mainly related to its polymerization degree and molecular weight. Compared with higher K-value grades such as SG5, SG8 generally provides lower melt viscosity and better flowability, which can be advantageous for certain processing applications.

Key Characteristics

SG8 is normally supplied as a white powder with good electrical insulation properties, chemical resistance and overall processing performance. Like other PVC resins, it requires an appropriate stabilizer system to prevent thermal degradation during processing.

Its relatively good flowability can be particularly useful when processing products with more complicated shapes or when easier melt processing is required.

Typical Applications

Depending on the formulation and processing conditions, PVC SG8 can be used in:

  • Rigid PVC products, including selected profiles, sheets and boards

  • Injection-molded products, especially products requiring good material flow

  • Selected PVC fittings and industrial components

  • Electrical and other applications where PVC's insulation properties are beneficial

The final properties of the product depend not only on the PVC resin grade, but also on the complete formulation, including stabilizers, lubricants, processing aids, impact modifiers and fillers.

SG8 vs. Other PVC Grades

PVC suspension resins are available in different grades, with different K-values and polymerization degrees. In general, higher K-value grades provide higher molecular weight, melt strength and mechanical performance, while lower K-value grades tend to offer easier processing and better flow.

SG5, for example, is widely used for PVC pipes, profiles and other applications where strength and melt strength are important. SG8, with its lower K-value, can be considered when processing flow and ease of processing are more important.

Therefore, there is no single “best” PVC grade. The appropriate grade should be selected according to the processing method, product design, required mechanical properties and overall formulation.

At VIKEM NEW MATERIAL, we supply PVC resin and a complete range of PVC additives for international customers, helping manufacturers select suitable raw materials for different applications.
